Edo court jails man for stealing groundnut oil

AN Egor Magistrate’s Court sitting in Benin, the Edo State capital, has sentenced one Evans Ewansesehia to one year imprisonment for stealing three gallons of groundnut oil.
The 22-year-old man had been arraigned for stealing and escaping from lawful custody.
The police prosecutor, Sunday Lucky, had told the court that the offence was committed on November 17, 2015, at Idemudia Street, off Lagos Street in Benin.The prosecutor had explained that the 22-year-old man stole three gallons of groundnut oil valued at N12,800 and belonging to one Mrs. Joy Adiodun.
Lucky said the convict, however, escaped from police custody after he was arrested and detained at Ugbowo Police Station.
He explained that the convict stole an apron containing the sum of N12, 000 from one Mrs. Victoria Imayehor at Uwasota area on December 2, 2015.
According to the prosecutor, “The offences contravened Sections 390(9) and 135(A) of the Criminal Code Cap 48 Vol II, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, as applicable in Edo.”
The defense counsel had appealed to the court for leniency as the convict was a first timer in the court.
But the trial magistrate, Mrs. Esohen Ighodan, convicted Ewansesehia after finding him guilty of the charges levelled against him.
Ighodan, however, gave option fine of N30, 000 each for the two-count charges.
